Bill Clinton’s attacks drew criticism from black S.C. leaders. U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., House Majority Whip, told Clinton to “tone it down.”
Left behind in South Carolina, Bill Clinton became the attack dog of his wife’s campaign.
His critiques of Obama brought a new level of divisiveness and rancor to the campaign, shocking South Carolinians who had never seen Clinton close up.
Tom Daschle of South Dakota, the former U.S. Senate majority leader, predicted the Clintons’ tactics could “destroy the party ultimately. It’s going to divide us, and it’s going to have a lasting effect down the road if it doesn’t stop soon.”
Should Hillary Clinton win the Democratic nomination, she will have bridges to repair with those who believe she and her husband deliberately sought to exploit issues of race for political gain.
For his part, the former president may have squandered much of the political capital he had in South Carolina.

MYRTLE BEACH — The Democratic candidates for president left a lasting impression — on voters and possibly each other — during a testy debate just five days before S.C. voters head to the polls.
U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, the acknowledged front-runners, began the debate at each other’s throats before settling into a discussion of race, opportunity and inclusion in U.S. politics.
The heated tone was a product of a race that has tightened nationally between Clinton and Obama, though Obama has a sizable lead in South Carolina.
At times the debate, held at the Palace Theatre, threatened to spin out of control as the smoldering dispute between Obama and the Clintons — both Hillary and former President Bill Clinton — flared into public view.

Former President Bill Clinton — standing in for his wife who has left South Carolina to campaign in other early primary states — greeted diners at a Lizard’s Thicket in downtown Columbia this morning, relishing his role as chief surrogate for Hillary Clinton.
[Bill] Clinton addressed the contentious debate Monday night between Hillary Clinton and Illinois U.S. Sen. Barack Obama that featured heated exchanges between the Democratic rivals. Obama, during an interview with State newspaper editors Monday, said Bill Clinton’s attacks on his record were not based on fact.
“There was nothing specific I said that was said to be inaccurate,” Bill Clinton said, referring to the Monday night debate and Obama’s charge that Bill Clinton had become the campaign’s attack dog.
